In the summer of 1994, the United States hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time — the world's premier international soccer tournament. Against all odds, the U.S. Men's National Team defied expectations, advancing further than anyone expected under their unconventional coach and igniting a new era of soccer in America.

BELIEVE IN THE TEAM

Bora Milutinović was the architect behind one of the most unexpected and transformative runs in American soccer history. Known for his unconventional methods and uncanny ability to unify players, Bora elevated a young, untested American squad into a team that advanced out of the first round and captured the imagination of a country that had never seen itself as a soccer nation. His leadership remains a defining coaching achievement that developed the '94 players as inspiring people on and off the field.

“Bora being this Yoda-esque type of figure, I think that there is an element of... yes he took his responsibility of making us into better soccer players very seriously, but I also think that he took his responsibility into making us better people as seriously.”

Through grants and other support, The DICK’S Foundation Sports Matter Program helps under-resourced 501c3 organizations, schools and community teams across all 50 states provide opportunities for youth to play sports.
